THE ICON:

Walter Kittredge Foster in 1855 developed the design to enable high-volume manufacturing. He founded the first pencil sharpener company in the world, distributing sharpeners across Europe and America.

It is such a humble desktop tool that its sculptural simplicity lies in plain sight, its tapered wedge-like form and striated detail, a true sculptural discovery. At less than an inch in length, it exhibits a range of graphic textures on every surface. The overall outline cast in alloy appears more like an example of modernist architecture rather than a domestic staple.

The photograph explores the simplicity of the brutal shape and the hard shaft of light channelled through the conical aperture between the blade and housing.
